So, three drunk guys get in a taxi. The cab driver knows they're crazy drunk, so he just turns the engine on and then off and says, "Okay we're here, that's sixty bucks."
The first drunk gives him the fare and gets out.
The second drunk thanks him and gets out.
The third drunk slaps him across the face.
The cabbie looks at him in shock, totally sure this guy figured him out. When he asks him why he slapped him, the third drunk goes, "Watch your speed for Chrissake, you almost killed us!"
...so, yeah. Just wanted to make someone laugh. Talk to you later.
[Skye shifts from her position on the couch... changes the TV channel... shifts around again... checks Twitter... checks Instagram...
She's already studied enough for one evening and there is literally nothing happening in Heropa tonight. No events. Nothing on the network. Not even anything good on TV. This is about the time when she'd call Jesse, but he's busy with work.
Frowning, she picks up her phone and scrolls through her contacts, firing off random messages to people she hasn't heard from in a bit. When she gets to Ellie's name, she pauses... are they well enough acquainted for Skye to send out a random text? ... Oh well.]
[Ellie's always careful when opening the door when home alone with Lucy. You never know who could be trying to kill you or steal your shit, and she figures that's probably an added bonus of having a dog--asshole deterrent. But said dog is passed the fuck out after a long day of playing at the park so there's no obnoxious barking at the knock. Real helpful, Lucy.
After peering out the peep hole, Ellie slips her knife back into her pocket and opens the door.]
[ It's late. Very late. Joel has not long gotten home. It's been a hell of a night: between a goddamn blind date with that asshole, Chilton, and seeing Tess - or a woman who looks like Tess - at the event, Joel has been pretty quiet and withdrawn.
He's still dressed in the suit Jesse had brought for him earlier that night. The jacket is long discarded over the back of the couch in the living room, and his sleeves are rolled up, his collar undone and his tie loose and crooked.
He approaches the bedroom he and Ellie share and comes to a stop in the doorway. He's tense; it's evident in his posture: shoulders tight, hands clenching and unclenching at his sides, his jaw set, a distracted and troubled look on his face. There's a bleariness to his eyes, too - he's been drinking, had a little too much scotch at the bar. The smell of alcohol is on his breath. Probably going to have a hangover by morning.
It's not just that woman that's playing on his mind. It's the conversation he had with Ellie the other day, how she'd challenged him, almost dared him to hit her.
He's just loitering in the doorway, awkward and uneasy, not quite able to look right at Ellie. ]
[It's a little too late for Ellie. The plan had been to stay up and wait for him to come home, but an hour or so ago she'd given in to heavy eyelids, face first into the pillows, one arm draped over Lucy who snores at her side. In fact, it's the dog that makes Ellie stir--when she groggily gets onto all four paws to thump off the bed and greet Joel, Ellie rolls onto her side to look where she went.]
Oh, hey. Manage to have any fun?
[She yawns and slowly sits up, eyes not all the way open.]
[ Late Sunday night. Joel had to leave in the morning on yet another long journey up to Pennsylvania. Routine though they'd become and as much as he'd long grown accustomed to the long trips, he wasn't particularly looking forward to leaving tomorrow. Hell, he never looked forward to leaving Ellie behind, but for some reason he was especially not looking forward to it in this case. No reason other than… well, maybe he was just tired.
Or maybe the film they'd just watched had left him feeling a little sad and sentimental. It was a dumb family movie, innocuous, non-violent, one of the only films showing at the cinema complex that Joel was certain wouldn't cause either of them to startle or have unpleasant memories of home dredged up.
Turned out the film was largely centred around Christmas: happy mom and dad, kids playing in snow, Santa Claus, Christmas trees… It made him ache a little inside for his little girl, remembering the way Sarah would get excited when he'd give in to her nagging about putting up the Christmas tree, and how she'd come barrelling into his room on Christmas morning, leaping all over him and shaking him awake at the asscrack of dawn to tell him, "Dad! Daddy! You gotta wake up! Santa's been!"
Anyway. He'd brought Ellie to see the film to spend some time with her, do something special with her, before having to leave in the morning. The film is ending now, the credits rolling up the big screen. The cinema is mostly empty, save for a couple of people. ]
Well. That pretty much rotted my back teeth. [ Which the film did: it was crappy and overly sugary sweet, a typical "wholesome American family" movie - but it was sentimental nonetheless. Gathering up the two empty buckets of popcorn, Joel nudged Ellie's side with his elbow. ] C'mon, then, kiddo. Ready to go?
Ellie has a better grasp of this whole holidays means family sort of thing, that Hallmark sort of life. She sees it in stores and in TV shows and in movies, but Christmas movies seem to be especially... mushy. In some ways, she watches it more like a documentary than a movie, making notes and comparisons and squinting her eyes at some parts because--really?
Once it's over, she hops up to follow after Joel, quiet.]
[Wrapped up kind of horribly and delivered via UPS is Ellie's gift: a shitton of different kinds of Christmas themed junk food. Red, white and green Peeps, marshmallow and chocolate Santas, peppermint Oreos; you name it.
