[ Waiting at a traffic light, Joel just shakes his head at Ellie's response, and then has to put the device aside to concentrate on driving when the light turns green. A few minutes later, he's pulling up into the curb outside the ice cream parlour. In the back seat, Lucy lets out a yap and stands up with her paws against the window, tongue lolling out happily. ]
Hi Lucy! [The puppy gets the first greeting as Ellie hops into the car, shutting the door behind her and laughing as Lucy scrambles into the front seat and onto her lap. She's already big enough to take it over.
After giving Lucy an appropriate amount of kisses, Ellie looks over at Joel.]
[ He's talking to the dog. Goddamn it. She's still puppy-sized but she's energetic and excitable enough that she could be dangerous if she got too excited while he was driving. ]
Just keep her under control, yeah?
[ Once Ellie is settled in the seat, though, Joel shifts the car into gear. And to answer her question, all he has to say is: ]
Something happened.
[ He sounds very serious, like he isn't playing around to mess with Ellie at all. ]
Ellie, I-- Look, I'll explain it when we get home, alright?
[ He turns his attention on the road as he merges out into the traffic. The corners of his mouth quirk in the smallest hint of a smirk that he's trying to suppress. Damn it, he doesn't want to give it away just yet that he's playing around. ]
[ Damn it. Joel glances across at Ellie. The distressed way she's looking at him, the distressed way she sounds... He doesn't want to spoil the surprise but he also doesn't want her to worry that much.
... you are. Oh my god, you asshole, I was worried! Don't scare me like that! [Funny how she doesn't sound all that annoyed. Joel joking around is... pretty awesome, actually.]
For the record, something did happen. And it will be best you wait 'til we get home to find out what that is 'cause it'll be easier to explain that way.
[ He's still attempting to sound pretty serious. Only a couple of blocks away from home now. ]
