[ He edges his way out of the row of chairs and into the aisle, and leads the way out of the theatre. He dumps the empty popcorn buckets into the trash along the way and comes to a slow stop in the mostly empty foyer. A kid probably not much older than Ellie is vacuuming the carpet nearby.

Joel looks to his side down at Ellie. He gives her what passes as a weak attempt at a thin smile. ]

You hungry?

[vaccination]

[She looks up at him, able to discern that the smile is a little... forced. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he's a little off, and the movie had to be the cause. What was like some alien show to Ellie was once Joel's life. Ellie considers bringing it up then and there, but maybe it'd be better over food.]

Yeah, starving. What do you feel like?

[shittybirthday]

[ He thinks about that for a moment, a kind of vaguely faraway look on his face. ]

Reckon I could go for some waffles. You?

[vaccination]

I'm in.

[He needs to stop that, though. Ellie steps in to give him a one-armed hug. Something to tide him over before she asks how he's doing.]

Thanks for the movie, Joel.

[ In spite of himself, the small hug warms his heart a little. ]

S'alright, kiddo.

[ He stretches his arm around her shoulders and starts slowly walking with her towards the exit. Halfway there, he gives her a small, affectionate squeeze against his side. Having her close helps. ]

[It's always reassuring when he does that. He's not good with words, so she accepts the little squeeze as the thanks that it is.]

Sooo...

[shittybirthday]

[ Almost reaching the door, Joel lets his arm go slack but keeps it around her shoulders. ]

So, that was a pretty dumb movie, huh?

[vaccination]

Was it? I don't know, are they supposed to be super cheesy?

[It's kinda lost on her.]

Heh. Yeah. Those sorta film're always cheesy as hell. [ He heads out onto the street with his arm still around Ellie's shoulders. ] They used to play a whole bunch of them kinda movies over Christmas on cable. One after the other.

I think I like the Halloween movies better.

[Those were more fun. Less heartwarming and somewhat... sad.]
